Seize the Day

For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away. 1 Peter 1:24

I love motivational posters, and one of my favorites is of an eagle at sunrise clutching a fish that it has just pulled from the water. I like it because I can just see the eagle flying low over the lake, tracking that fish that is completely unaware of what is about to happen to it. At just the right instant, that eagle thrusts its claws into the belly of that fish and rips it out of the water. The camera captured the eagle at such a great moment that you can even see the water droplets still pouring off the side of the fish. But perhaps the greatest part of the poster is the three little words captioned at the bottom - “Seize the day.” That eagle had only one opportunity to take that fish. If he had scooped in and missed, his meal would have become acutely aware of the danger and would have been gone.

So it is with each moment in our day. One of the things that people are most guilty of is wasting time. Perhaps it is because they feel they have so much time left, but none of us know when our next breath will be our last. As it says in 1 Peter 1:24, our lives are just like grass or a like a flower. It can be alive and well one minute and dried up and dead the next.

It may be that your life could be like William Borden of Yale. He was an heir to the throne of the Borden Milk Company, but he surrendered all the wealth that could have been his to give his life completely to the service of Jesus Christ. On his way to northern China as a missionary, he stopped in Egypt to learn Arabic. It was there that he contracted spinal meningitis and was dead within one month. His legacy was completely written by the time he died at age 25. And it was a great legacy he left.

What would be your legacy if you were to die one month from today? Are you doing all you can for the cause of Christ right now? Seize the moment. Make the most of the time that you have left on this earth.
