Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. James 4:14

The other day, one of the guys in my teen group said he didn’t want to just make a million dollars; he said he wanted to make a billion. So I asked him what he would actually do if he even had only a million dollars. He started trying to list some things he would buy. He said he would buy a bunch of CDs, he would buy a fishing boat, he would buy some hunting clothes, and he would buy six or seven guns. All in all, assuming he bought the nicest of each of these items, he came up with roughly $40,000. That is a far cry from the billion he wishes he had.

What if each day you were given $86,400 to spend on whatever you wished to spend it on? You could do anything you wanted to with it, but whatever was not spent at the end of the day was lost. Most of us would do what it seems our sisters already do on a daily basis: spend money like crazy. You would probably buy clothes, shoes, iPods, guns, boats, houses, cars, and whatever else you desired. The more industrious ones might try to invest that money in a company they were trying to start. Eventually you might get sick of buying things and start giving money away just so it would be spent at the end of the day. If it were me, I would not want to see a single dollar lost just because I didn’t spend it.

Believe it or not, you have 86,400 “somethings” that are far more valuable than dollars. You are given that many seconds in a day. Whatever seconds you don’t use will be lost forever. You only have one chance to make those seconds count. You might use them to accomplish things that need to be done in your life. You might invest them in a project you would like to accomplish. Or, you might just give them away to help others who could really use them. Whatever the case, they are precious and should not be wasted. You only get one chance at life, and when those seconds are gone, they can never be brought back.
