Step Up

Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee. 1 Timothy 4:16

*Though this can help anyone, it may be most helpful for young men and ladies. Please share this with them.

You have probably been to a baseball game at some point in your life. Whether it was at a professional game, a minor-league game, or just a recreation league game with some friends, there has come a point where the game was on the line, and there was only one batter left. His team is down by one run, and there is one man on base. Everything is up to him. It wasn’t by his choice that he was the last batter and that winning or losing the game depended upon him; but that is where it stands. How he has prepared himself in the practices before this big at-bat now plays a huge role in the outcome of the game. When the time comes for him to step up to the plate, he can do one of two things. He can cower behind the excuse that it is not his fault that their team is down, or he can step up and try to make the play that will turn him into a hero. He can stand there with the bat on his shoulder and do nothing, or he can posture himself into the position to knock the ball out of the park. Whatever he chooses, the choice is his. He may not be better than the pitcher, but he still must give it his all if his team has any chance of winning.

Winston Churchill said, “There comes into the life of every man a task for which he and he alone is uniquely suited. What a shame if that moment finds him either unwilling or unprepared for that which would become his finest hour.” All around us, young men are abandoning their responsibility to step up to the plate. More and more, they are using the excuse that it is their parents’ fault that the world is in the shape it is in. They cower behind their video games and entertainment when the world is counting on them to step up in this critical moment. This is not the time for young men, especially Christian young men, to roll over and pretend like all the problems will just go away. Now, more than ever, it is time to get into the Word of God and study it. Now, more than ever, it is crucial to spend more time in prayer instead of less. The world and the ruler of it are powerful enemies. We may not be able to defeat it until Jesus Christ comes back, but it is certain that we will never come close if we don’t even try. If Christianity is to have any hope of triumph in this life, it is going to be because young men determined that they would give their all for the cause of Christ. Step up to the plate, and embrace the opportunity to “hit it out of the park.”
