One of the biggest events that takes place in your life behind the day you get your kindergarten diploma is the day you get your driver’s license. That is also the day that one of the biggest controversies takes shape before your eyes. When they put your information on your license, they always ask you if you want to be an organ donor. I have agreed to be an organ donor. Somewhere along the line, somebody scared people into thinking that being an organ donor means if you get into a minor traffic accident an organ harvester will come rip out all your intestines and leave you in a pile on the side of the road. As a former EMT myself, I can assure you that those in the back of the ambulance are not trying to kill you so they can have your organs. In fact, the exact opposite is true. EMTs are doing everything they can to keep everyone alive; but it actually works in the favor of the organ donor. Organs are best when donated as fresh as possible, so EMTs will do everything they can to keep an organ donor alive, at least until they get to a hospital. If nothing can be done to keep the person alive, then at least his organs will be that much better for someone else to use.
I have never been called upon to give all my organs to someone, and I have never been in a position to donate even one of my organs to someone in need of it. But I am already an organ donor – I have given my heart to Jesus Christ. When I was five years old, I accepted Jesus Christ as my Saviour. I realized that I was a sinner, and, as such, could not enter Heaven when I die. My Sunday school teacher led me to Christ, and that day, a new heart was created within me.
A few years later, as a young man in high school, I felt God calling me to give my life to serve Him full-time in the ministry. I gave Him my heart again. It was a decision that, to this day, I am thankful for. I have reaped the benefits ten times over, and I expect them to continue. Contrary to what many believe about giving your life to God, God did not send me to Africa or immediately doom me to a life of hard labor with no pay because I decided to give my life to Him. That is a myth planted in the hearts of young people by Satan himself because he knows what God could really do with a young man who gave his heart to God completely.
You may never see the little heart in the bottom corner of your license indicating that you are a physical organ donor, but anyone can willingly give his heart to God and never be disappointed.
