Consider the ravens: for they neither sow nor reap; which neither have storehouse nor barn; and God feedeth them: how much more are ye better than the fowls? Luke 12:24
Where I live in Virginia, we don’t get a lot of snow. A fresh blanket had just fallen, however, as I sat looking out my office window. My mind was on other things when movement began catching my eye. I realized it was a bird, flitting from place to place. The more I watched, the more birds I saw. They were all over the yard, moving about in the snow, in search of food. I was tempted to feel sorry for them because I knew they would gather nothing under the expanse of white that now covered the ground. To my surprise, I noticed that each of them was finding and eating little pieces of “food.” To me, their situation seemed hopeless, but to them, they were just carrying on with their daily living. They were not in a panic, they were not flustered, and they sure seemed like that hadn’t a care in the world. Even though their typical world was in an upheaval, God had not forgotten them. He remembered that they needed food, and He supplied them with just what they were looking for.
Isn’t that exactly the way that God cares for His children? That is essentially the question that Jesus asked His disciples in Luke 12. He told them to think about how the birds are taken care of, how they have no thought for where their next meal would come from. Then Jesus made them think. “If God would do all that for them,” He asked, “don’t you think He will do even more to take care of you who are so much better than birds?”
Our lives are very important to God. Yet, sometimes when our world gets turned upside down, the temptation is to question whether God even cares. Bad things happen even to Christians. Maybe your parents are divorced, or you are not doing well in school. You might get picked on at school and elsewhere, or maybe you struggle with making ends meet. God knows, and He cares. The birds are taken care of because they are not worried about how they are going to survive. They implicitly trust the One Who created them. That is the mindset that God wants us to have, as well. There should be nothing in our lives to worry about if we truly believe that God can take care of us. If He would do all that for the birds, don’t you think He would do the same for us?
