Alone in a Crowd

Thou tellest my wanderings: put thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy book?

Psalm 56:8

Sometimes the loneliest place in world is in the middle of a crowd. It feels like everyone there is having a good time and enjoying each other’s company, and you are an island. Some of God’s greatest saints suffered through some times of unimaginable loneliness. Elijah felt alone when he ran for his life from Jezebel; Job felt alone as he battled through his hardships; David faced times of extreme loneliness as he ran from Saul, and later from Absalom. Even Jesus Christ Himself faced lonely times when all His disciples abandoned Him. Feeling alone is one of the most helpless feelings in the world because you feel as if you have been abandoned with no help on the horizon.

Let me encourage you with the words from Psalm 56:8. As David ran from King Saul and right into the hands of King Achish in the land of the Philistines, he began to feel as if his world was coming to an end. He poured his heart out to God and encouraged himself that God saw every tear and was storing them in His bottle. David’s tears of loneliness and hurt were not going unseen. God was recording every one of those tears as He was moving David toward what He was trying to accomplish in his life. As you pour your tears out to God after being betrayed by a friend, being let down by your parents or loved ones, or when you are in the middle of an overwhelming trial, remember that every one of your tears is being captured and recorded by God. He knows where you are, and He has not abandoned you.

There are a few things you can do to help you get through the feelings of loneliness. The first is to be sure you are saved. You will never lose that feeling of loneliness if you are unsure of where you will spend eternity. The second is to be sure you are right with God. If you are harboring unconfessed sin in your life, then God certainly will not be your companion of comfort. With sin in your life, He cannot even hear your prayers. When you are living your life in line with the Word of God, then there is no greater joy or companionship than the fellowship of His sufferings. Remember, Christ has been through exactly what you are going through, and He knows how you feel. If you are saved and right with God, then the third thing is that you can be sure that God is there and that He is working on your behalf. He knows where you are, and He will never leave you or forsake you.
